Today I attended my very first Flicks for Free on campus because honestly I needed to attend an event for this class and it was all that was left. However I was pleasantly surprised at the a) the turnout, and b) the film. I thought it was so cool how OSU Student Life puts together these events for students and not that many people take advantage of it. It was very interesting to see such a film with a vast array of students though. Going to the movies with your friends is usually a fun ordeal but it just had a different feel to it. It almost seemed out of place. Perhaps this is why the attendance is not very high at these events. Anyway, while I was there, I obviously had to tweet and I decided I'd try to get some awareness of this event. I used handles for Ohio State, Ohio Union, and the movie itself, yet I could not get a retweet. I guess the union was not interested in my lonely advertising. Either way, the people who follow me, and whoever searches for the handles and hashtags I use will see my tweets, and hopefully this event will gather some strength!

Wait, That's a Brochure?
After checking out the website listed in the brochure slideshow, it opened my eyes to what brochures can really accomplish with communication.
We all know the basic concept of brochures to be small print advertisements for attractions, companies, landmarks, etc... In every hotel I've ever stayed in there's always a kiosk filled with tri-fold brochures advertising the local amenities and attractions. Of course I browse while I wait for my parents to get our keys, and I'm sure they do too as they wait for fresh towels, but often times it's nothing more than that. I truthfully never realized there was more to a brochure, until I saw this...
This design completely changed the way I thought of brochures.
I feel like all these new types of designs can have a huge impact on the way brochures are use throughout the communications field. With these new types of designs, the message impact now is greater than ever before.
People respond to shock value and these new designs achieve that. In the above design, we see all sorts of color contrasts, symmetry, and a nice reading flow that will keep readers enticed. Most people just disregard the standard tri-folds, but with these I feel people will be more inclined to read the entirety of brochures, and now people will be able to more uniquely represent your product to a broader audience.
With these new brochures, communications departments now have so many more opportunities with what they want to do to help promote their clients. The sky is the limit with how agencies will use these new design ideas and I'm excited to see what will happen.

You win Twitter
After doing this Twitter assignment, it has kind of opened my eyes into the world of Twitter. I have had my own personal account for over a year now, and I’m still only the type of guy who uses it mainly to follow people I find interesting. Now, I still tweet the occasional tweet throughout the day, but mainly I want to know what other people are doing. That’s really what I like best about Twitter, it allows you to feel more connected into peoples’ lives. When us normal people get let into the personal lives of celebrities, or into the business doings of major corporations, we feel closer to those people.
I found it interesting though how different people tended to tweet though. As expected, media and profesional groups tended to tweet very professionally and only information. However, as the type of news group got more popular, they often times inserted humor into their tweets. I noticed this mainly from Fox News, CNN, and from ESPN. It is somewhat refreshing I will admit to have humorous tweets from what seems to be such serious information sources. I think the reasoning behind doing this is to keep their followers interested. If there’s some humor in their feed, then they would be more inclined to keep following them.
Overall, I am man of enough to admit that at first I was completely against Twitter, but after my time of using one I am a fan. There are just too many people and interesting handles to follow that can enlighten you day. Sadly, right now I am without cable and I get the majority of my news from Twitter and whatever else I see online. Often times, what I see on Twitter makes me want to go online and see what is going on.

That timeless little white mustache
I think that these types of campaigns are very successful just because of the shear popularity and mass appeal. Let’s consider the “Got Milk” campaign for starters. How many of us never saw one of these posters with one of our favorite childhood athletes in school with the milk mustache? I would wager none. I know personally, these posters were in every school I attended throughout my childhood. It’s such a great campaign too because it can appeal to such a vast array of people. Mainly I feel they use athletes, but it is the type of athletes they use. I’ve seen males and females from just about every sport on their commercials or posters. When using these types of spokespeople you’re appealing to not only both genders, but multiple age groups.
Now, I feel the “Got Milk” campaign is beginning to use more characters and famous movie stars to help promote. This can open up a whole other level of target audiences. We’ve always been told that milk makes for stronger bones, and when the campaign was using athletes it made sense. Athletes need to be strong, therefore they need milk. Now, using fictional characters and movie stars they can ever be making for healthier children in general. Not all kids are athletes, but all of them need to be healthy, and the people at “Got Milk” realize that.

Welcome Post
I've really been one for these types of things, but for the sake of the class I'll give it a shot.
When I think of a welcome post, I think I might as well explain a little bit about myself. My name is Alex Huegle and I'm currently a 5th year senior majoring in strategic communications. I am from Fairfield, Ohio, which is a city just a little bit north of Cincinnati. I've been playing the drums ever since 5th grade and have a plan after graduation to move to Nashville and give the whole rock-star thing a chance.I know it sounds silly, but it's always been a dream of mine so I definitely want to follow it.
My main interest in a job within communications comes from the appeal of working in so many different avenues. This major can allow me to work in so many different career fields and do a multitude of different things. I'm not one of those people who would be OK with doing the same thing for a job everyday.
I have a little bit of experience working in communications, and coming up with marketing plans. I'm just interested in learning more about writing for different mediums in this class so I can be more well-rounded for future employers.
